I have always thought that one of the peculiarities of Italy was that each city is completely different from the other. I know that the cropped photos composed of this work are from Milan, yet from the first minute I saw Turin, my city.
It is probable that Paolo Ventura actually wanted to create non-places, non-cities, without people, without movement, without animation. I would say that he succeeded: this city is not Milan and it is not Turin.
Like all photos of empty cities, this too creates a sense of melancholy, fear and sadness. As for Gian Maria Tosatti the fireflies at the 2022 Biennale, here the spots of color are the hope for me, the hope that the pandemic or whatever Paolo wanted to depict in some way will first and then go away.
